BTA Deep Bore Drilling Inserts

Deep bore drilling inserts are used in applications with hole diameters larger than the insert radius, typically in the aerospace industry and automotive manufacturing.bta deep bore drilling inserts BTA (Boring and Trepanning Association) drilling is one of the most common methods for these applications, also known as STS or Single Tube System drills. Unlike gun or twist drills which use a rotating tool body, a BTA drill uses an insert with replaceable carbide guide pads to create the hole. This method has a number of benefits over the traditional gun drills, including higher productivity and better surface finish.

However, BTA deep bore drilling can produce poor surface quality and dimensional accuracy if the proper care is not taken. The reasons for these problems include inadequate coolant management, poor chip evacuation, and tool wear, among others. It is important to maintain good cooling and chip evacuation, as well as to regularly inspect the rake face of the insert and the surface of the guide pad for signs of damage or wear.

A key to optimizing BTA machining is reducing the radial force that deflects the drill head during machining. This can be achieved by changing the angle of the insert’s cutting edge, or by removing the rake face altogether and using a flat tip. This can reduce the asymmetry between the tool head and the drill tube, which leads to fewer vibrations during the cutting process.

Another method of improving the dimensional accuracy and surface finish of BTA drilling is to reduce the thickness of the WEL. These are the microhardness deposits on the rake face of the cutting insert, formed during high contact stress and friction between the tool and the hole wall. These deposits cause the rake face to become worn, and can lead to a zero flank angle in some cases. In addition, they can increase the tensile and compressive stresses in the subsurface of the material and lead to cracks.

Several methods of reducing the thickness of WEL have been proposed, but none has yet been proven to be effective. To improve the efficiency of this method, the effects of different feed and cutting speeds should be studied. Ultimately, this research will provide a scientific basis for controlled subsurface conditioning in BTA drilling and lay the groundwork for the development of a new methodology for precision deep-hole machining.
