When a long drill makes contact with a surface that isn’t perfectly perpendicular to the axis of rotation, the drill has an inherent tendency to bend slightly. This can cause the drill to make a hole at an obtuse angle and in an incorrect location. In this case, the drill will most likely need to be corrected by readjusting the workholding system or changing the bit.
The machinist who performs this task needs to be proficient in listening to the sound of the drill, observing the chips, monitoring machine load and oil pressure, and paying attention to many other indicators in order to achieve precise results. However, the machinist must also be familiar with the unique challenges of this machining process and how to overcome them in order to meet strict tolerance standards.
There are two main types of deep hole drilling: gun drilling and BTA (Boring and Trepanning Association) deep hole drilling. Gun drilling is suited to small diameters and relatively shallow holes, while BTA deep hole drilling is suitable for larger diameters and deeper holes. BTA deep hole drilling is a multi-step process that includes an initial drill, reaming and boring for size control and surface finish, and a final hone for diameter accuracy and straightness.
BTA drilling requires a complex system of high-precision components specifically designed and built for this purpose. These systems can accommodate the necessary drills and tools, while maintaining the rigidity required to hold tight tolerances. They can also handle high feed rates, allowing for greater throughput than the alternative gundrilling machine.
