Two Types of STS Drilling Tools
Drilling deep holes requires a combination of tools, workpieces and machine equipment to overcome challenges that arise due to the large ratio between hole depth and diameter.sts drilling tools Specifically, these conditions call for high accuracy with regard to straightness, dimensional tolerance and surface finish.
The most common method for achieving these qualities is BTA drilling (Boring Trepanning Association), also known as STS, Single Tube System drilling. This process uses internal chip removal and offers advantages in both productivity and hole quality when compared to gun drills.
Two types of sts drilling tools are available – brazed or indexable – and which one is best for your application depends on the following factors:
Regardless of whether you use a brazed or an indexable BTA tool, a pressurized coolant surrounds the drill head when in operation, forcing chips through open spaces built into the head and out through the drill tube the head is threaded onto. This allows for a continuous, uninterrupted feed process without the need for peck cycles or feed interruptions. The result is a much faster drilling rate and a consistent cutting diameter.
Indexable BTA tools have carbide inserts either directly mounted to the head with a retaining screw or seated in a cartridge that is mounted to the head. The indexed design allows the operator to loosen the retaining screw and rotate the insert, exposing a fresh cutting edge. As long as your insert and pocket are made with tight tolerances, this method will deliver a consistently accurate cutting diameter.
